Maya, 16Akron, OH

I sent a message at 1am expecting nothing back till morning. Somebody answered in four minutes and just let me talk. I didn’t know how much I needed that.

Devon, 15Marysville, OH

My coach never told me what to do. She asked the one question I’d been avoiding, and I ended up talking to my mum the next day.

Not your basic support app

Sonar is a 24/7 wellbeing support app for young people. Every chat connects you with a Wellbeing Coach who gets it and helps you talk things through like a human (because they are one).

Wellbeing Coaches?

They’re real people who are trained to support teens. They’re not therapists, but they’re great at listening and helping you feel seen. Plus, they are supported by a team of mental health pros.

Are my chats really private?

Your chats are private, and we work hard to keep them that way. If we think you may be in immediate danger, we may share limited information to help keep you safe.

What if I need to talk rn?

Before school, after practice, or late at night, you can access Sonar anytime from your preferred device. No appointments or scheduling so you always have someone who listens.

Support for you, and reassurance for the adults in your life

For parents & caregivers

Sonar is offered in partnership with Akron Children’s Hospital and may be introduced during well-child visits or recommended by your clinician.

It gives young people a simple way to talk things through, helping them get support outside of clinic walls and stay connected between visits.

Sonar is not therapy, but an additional layer of support that helps bridge the gap to care.

FAQ

  1. Sonny is a free, 24/7 support tool for students. You can text with a real human who’s trained to help teens talk things out. Sonny isn’t a random chatbot. Behind every message is a trained Wellbeing Coach. Some have been peer mentors or worked at youth helplines. A lot of them have been through hard stuff too, so they actually get it.

  2. They’re real people (not bots) who are trained to support teens. They’re not therapists, but they’re great at listening, asking helpful questions, and helping you feel seen. Plus, they work under the guidance of licensed mental health pros.

  3. Nope. When you chat with Sonny, you’re always talking to a real person. We do use AI behind the scenes to help our Coaches respond faster and smarter, but your messages are always answered by a human.

  4. Yes, what you say stays between you and Sonny. The only time we’d break that privacy is if we’re seriously concerned about your safety. If we’re really worried about you, we may reach out to a trusted adult to make sure you get support.

  5. No. Your conversations are private. The only time we’d share anything is if we’re really worried about your safety and even then, we’d try to talk with you about it first.

  6. Not at all. You can reach out anytime, even if it’s just to vent, talk about your day, or share something that’s been on your mind. If it feels ick, you can ghost us.

  7. You’re not alone, and there is help.

If you ever mention something that sounds serious, Sonny will check in, offer support, and suggest resources like the 988 Crisis Line. If we’re really worried about your safety, we may reach out to your emergency contact to make sure someone can help you right away.

If you stop responding, and we can’t reach anyone, and we believe you’re in immediate danger, we may contact emergency services to help keep you safe.

Our goal is to support you with care and respect.

  8. We’d love to hear from you. You can reach out to your school’s Sonar Champion or email us directly at support@sonarmentalhealth.com. Your thoughts, ideas, or concerns (big or small) help us make Sonar better for everyone.
